How Does Financial Coaching Work?

For some reason the whole business of analyzing stocks has been made to seem so esoteric and technical that normally careful consumers invest their life savings on a whim. The same couple that spends the weekend searching for the best deal on airfares to London buys 500 shares of KLM without having spent five minutes learning about the company.

Investing without research is like playing stud poker without looking at the cards.

The structure of financial coaching is flexible. Typically, the process starts with a free initial consultation to discuss your goals and needs and the package that might work best for you. Then we develop an action plan together and schedule a regular series of coaching sessions over a one to three month period. In between meetings, we typically use email to exchange and clarify information and keep you on track with meeting summaries, reminders and ‘to do’ lists. Financial coaching goals can often be met in as little as a month or two and most clients find that financial coaching more than pays for itself within the first year through cost savings and improved investment returns.

Unlike typical brokerage or financial planning services, your financial coach is not wedded to a particular service provider. No matter what firm(s) you use for your 401(k), IRA or brokerage accounts, financial coaching can help you get the most out of the products and services offered and can help you learn how to make all the pieces of your family financial puzzle work together.

Your financial coaching options depend on your needs and interests:

The Financial Coaching Starter Package: For those just beginning to work on their investments, the Starter Package is a quick, easy and cost-effective way to get going.

Financial Decision-Making Package: The Financial Decision-Making coaching packages are designed to give you the information and perspective you need to get your finances in order. This package is ideal if you are looking to systematically review your financial accounts, make informed changes, and determine whether you’re on track to meet key financial goals.

Financial Skills Coaching Packages: Most people who choose this track have had experience managing their own money and already have their financial house in good order. Typically, they already own a well-balanced, diversified portfolio of funds, stocks and bonds and track it regularly. They enjoy the research and money management process and would like to sharpen key skills or investigate individual stocks or funds with a master investment coach.

Small Group Coaching and Workshops: Want to share the fun and network with others interested in money management? Join one of our small group workshops or help organize one yourself.

To Begin: A short 20–30 minute meeting can be arranged to discuss your goals and needs and the coaching package that might work best for you. There is no charge for this initial consultation. SCHEDULE A FREE APPOINTMENT
